How Cold Should Your Ice Bath Be?

It's the question we hear most at the front desk, usually asked with a nervous laugh: "How cold do I actually have to go?"

Good news. Your first plunge is not a test, and you don't have to start at freezing.

You Don't Have to Start Freezing

According to Morozko Forge, you don't need near-freezing water to feel the effects of cold exposure. For many beginners, 40–50°F for a couple of minutes is plenty. As your body adapts, you can slowly work colder.

Our Morozko baths run between 32 and 52°F, so there's room to start gentle and grow into it.

How Cold Is Cold Enough?

Morozko's simple rule is one we love: cold enough to gasp, long enough to shiver.

That gasp is your body waking up. The shiver is your body making its own heat. You don't need to prove anything by staying in forever. A short, intentional plunge can be enough to create a real response.

And the part that matters most? Doing it again. The more consistently you plunge, the more your body adapts, and the easier those first 30 seconds get.

Why Plunge at YCB Instead of at Home

A tub in the backyard is just cold water. At YCB, the cold is part of a full routine, with people who can walk you through it the first time.

  • Morozko Forge ice baths (32–52°F)
  • Traditional Swedish sauna
  • Salt-water hot tub
  • Red Light Lounge and Green Light Room
  • JetBoots compression
  • Yoga: Flow, Yin, Restorative, and Heated

Warm up in the sauna, plunge, relax in the hot tub, finish under red light. Stay 20 minutes or two hours. You decide what your body needs that day.

A Simple Progression for Beginners

If you're brand new, here's an easy way to build up over your first month:

  • Week 1: Get in on the warmer side of the range for 1 to 2 minutes. Focus only on slow breathing.
  • Week 2: Stay the same temperature, but add 30 seconds once your breath settles faster.
  • Week 3: Try a colder bath for a shorter time. Notice how quickly you calm down.
  • Week 4: Pair your plunge with the sauna and see how contrast feels.

Get out whenever you need to. Listen to your body, not the clock. If you're pregnant or have a heart condition, high blood pressure, or another health concern, check with your doctor before cold plunging.

Where Should You End?

Some members love finishing cold and walking out buzzing with energy. Others prefer to warm up gently in the hot tub or under red light. There's no wrong answer. Try both and notice which leaves you feeling your best for the rest of the day.
